YOLA at Camino Nuevo Code of Conduct
Attendance Policy
Students are required to attend 80% of their classes for the semester. If a student attends less
than 80% of classes in a semester, they will be placed on probation the following semester. They will be removed from probation if they attend 80% or more of classes during the probation period. If a student fails to attend 80% of classes during their probation period, then they will be removed from the program. (We are flexible if a child must leave a little early once a week). This program is designed for students to attend four days a week to optimize student achievement.
Code of Conduct
As a member of the YOLA community, your child is on a path to develop their musical potential as well as life and leadership skills. To that end, your child will be expected to uphold the highest behavioral standards for themself and practice respect, tolerance, active participation, and collaboration with all YOLA teaching faculty, staff, peers, and all YOLA stakeholders. If any issue arises between young musicians in the program, please immediately let your site program director know so that they can help in facilitating a solution. Mistakes and disagreements are a part of growing, but only if responsibility is taken to productively work through those conflicts.
As a part of YOLA, it is crucial that each participant adhere to and practice the following values:
• Self-Respect and Respect for Community
• Safety (for Self and Community)
• Curiosity
• Inclusion
• Collaboration
• Creativity
Incident Reporting/Discipline Policy
In the event a student does adhere to YOLA’s code of conduct or program guidelines, staff are required to document the infraction and provide it to their respective directors. Staff will involve parents when needed to find the best mode of support for students with challenging behaviors. Students who failed to meet program guidelines will be met with the following procedures:
• 1st verbal warning, restating expectations
• 2nd verbal warning, restating expectation
• Students will work with a staff member to complete a reflection form.
• Contact parent to partner with them and find the best mode of support for the student.
If negative behaviors persist, a student may be asked to not attend program for a few days. Our goal is to create a supportive environment to meet the unmet need in a child’s life and to help find restorative methods for students to continue with YOLA.
Health and Safety Awareness
Stay with the Group and within Pre-Designated Spaces
Musicians should stay within the established bounds of any location they are traveling to. Musicians must stay within view of YOLA team members. This rule applies to all participants regardless of age as the program is responsible for your safety and well-being.
Appropriate Interactions
Harassment Policy
YOLA strives to foster a learning and working environment that is free from harassment in a
community where every individual is treated with sensitivity and respect. This means that YOLA will not tolerate harassment of individuals for any reason, including but not limited to, race, disability, sex, ideology, sexual orientation, gender identity, socioeconomic level, age, national origin, or religion.
Harassment can also be destructive to a healthy community. Harassment includes easily identified acts of verbal, written, or physical abuse, and more subtle, but equally damaging, forms of harassment, such as graffiti, epithets and stereotypical remarks, insults, or poor “humor.” This is also applicable to any forms of harassment via social media or other virtual and digital platforms.
YOLA is also a learning environment for young people who are still growing and in different stages of developmental growth. There will be levels of intervention to support all YOLA musicians in learning from mistakes and making better and smarter choices in the future. Below are standard interventions that will be employed in these scenarios:
• Parent/Guardian and YOLA musician meetings to address the concern and arrive at a productive consequence inclusive of in-program reduced activity or a brief leave of absence.
• Any physical altercations will automatically result in a leave from program, the duration of which will be determined by the level of the action and damage caused. This can vary from a few days to a few weeks away from program.
• Reflection forms and essays to help YOLA musicians process their actions and build better steps toward the future.
Musician-to-Musician Interactions
To ensure a safe and educational environment, all YOLA musicians should:
• Never display abusive behaviors.
• Refrain from using language that is coercive, threatening, intimidating, derogatory, or
demeaning.
• Refrain from any interactions that can be classified as bullying or hazing.
• Promote mutual respect, tolerance, and acceptance of others.
• Musicians sending explicit or inappropriate messages whether written, graphic or pictures will not be tolerated and could be grounds for immediate dismissal from the program.
